As part of the Finance department, the U.S. Cellular® Shared Analytical and Data Services team (SANDS) is comprised of highly technical resources with diverse backgrounds in data warehousing, business intelligence, analytics, forecasting, and CRM. The SANDS team is responsible for delivering data solutions, analytical tools, campaign execution, and business insights to our stakeholders in Marketing, Finance, Customer Service, and Sales Operations.

The Business Intelligence Consultant is responsible for tracking and evaluating the performance of U.S. Cellular’s Cognos reporting environment.  Responsible for developing and maintaining operational and financial measurement models, populates and runs those models using data stored in U.S. Cellular’s customer databases, works with key business stakeholders to interpret results, and presents those results in key periodic readout and governance meetings.  Responsible for tracking and reporting on the value created by changes in Cognos reporting efficiency and/or effectiveness as achieved thorough key enterprise capability development initiatives.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to gather requirements to develop solutions to meet their needs
  • Acts as the lead resource in coordinating both the measurement and evaluation of all business client reporting for stakeholders assigned; works collaboratively with stakeholders to examine business results and explore reasons for good and poor performance
  • Required to design, build, and apply programming and database logic and filters for the generation of complex business reporting using U.S. Cellular’s Standard Reporting suite of software tools (currently IBM Cognos)
  • Executes and maintains programs that are required for the Quality Assurance processes related to the execution of the business Cognos reporting environment
  • Validates the data needed for the data extraction processes to obtain the required data and works collaboratively with team members
  • Validates the data needed to populate business reporting performance models and works collaboratively with team members
  • In partnership with other business stakeholders, presents the results and evaluation of reporting activities to leadership in formal readout and governance meetings
  • Provides operational and financial reporting for assigned business client areas
  • Develops and provides insights and recommendations that inform the business unit strategy
  • Designs and leads the execution of complex Cognos reporting, including the following:
    • Business metrics and performance (e.g. gross adds, churn, ARPU, response rates)
    • Understanding various attributes of the customer base (e.g. device, price plan, number of lines, etc)
  • Reporting business activity and other information by channel
  • Provides mentorship to all other levels of analysts within the department
  • Manage medium level projects within the department or broader organization
  • Lead cross functional teams when needed for broader departmental requests or enterprise initiatives
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required; Master’s degree in information technology, statistics, finance or economics preferred; MBA a plus
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a relevant field 
  • Advanced knowledge of database extraction and data manipulation using SQL or other standard reporting tools
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Visio
  • High level of experience in reporting tools, ideally Cognos.  Other tools could include Microstrategy, Business Objects, Tableau, or Qlikview
  • Ability to work with clients and cross-functional groups
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to think broadly and critically about a problem/request and apply business, company, and industry acumen to develop a solution
  • Ability to work closely in a collaborative manner with peers and managers across the organization
  • Advanced and demonstrated Excel modeling skills
  • Experience with Visual Basic preferred or a similar programming language 
  • Proficient in analytical tools such as SAS
  • Data management experience
  • Significant knowledge of wireless industry or other industries with similar analytical structures
  • Strong presentations skills 
  • Ability to develop solutions independently with limited or no engagement from manager or peers
  • Project/program management experience
  • Stakeholder/client management experience 
  • Ability to interface with C-level leadership effectively 
  • 7+ years experience in business reporting development, including Cognos environment management, execution and measurement
  • Proficient with database abilities in SQL, TOAD, Oracle (or other RDBMS experience), Unix/Linux
  • 5+ years experience with Cognos suite of tools
  • Must understand both operational measures as well as financial measures for business client stakeholder area.
